THE EQUAL-PROTECTION RESOLUTION (QUESTION 4)
How a resolution covering residents “regardless of nationality, citizenship or immigration status” reached Yarmouth’s May 2026 ballot.
DEC 2, 2025
A resolution adapted from Barnstable’s Aug 21, 2025 resolution was placed on the Select Board agenda for “Discussion/Possible Vote.”
35 SIGNERS
Petition under G.L. c.53 §18A received Feb 27, 2026; the Town Clerk certified 35 signatures and set an Apr 7 deadline for the Board to decide.
BOARD’S CHOICE
A 10-voter §18A petition only asks the Board to place a question. The Select Board chose to put it on the ballot on Mar 24, 2026; without the Board it would have taken signatures from 10% of voters.
2,033–1,657
Question 4 passed (unofficial results). Turnout: 3,757 of 23,052 registered voters — 16.3%.
PERMANENT OVERRIDES AND SCHOOL SPENDING
$1,481,348
Permanent D-Y schools override, May 2026 — passed 1,905 to 1,848 (certified), a 57-vote margin.
$680,194

8 SINCE 2012
Permanent D-Y school overrides Yarmouth has passed since FY2012 — about $5.31M at face value (our sum of the state’s own rows).
$83,748,973
D-Y FY27 operating budget, adopted 5–2 on Mar 9, 2026.
$1,304,162
Moved from reserves (E&D) to one-time items in the same budget, voted 7–0.
+20.3%
Superintendent’s Office budget line: $428,737 (FY25) to $515,891 (FY26 request). Office line, not salary.
THE $35.7 MILLION LIBRARY
$35,706,091
Proposed library project. It failed at Town Meeting, 314 to 177 (two-thirds needed).
1,325–2,425
The debt exclusion then lost at the ballot. A 272-voter petition forced a June 24 special meeting anyway, where the article was indefinitely postponed.
